MARILLION
THE BEST OF 1983-1987
How anachronic was a band such as Marillion when they released their debut album in 1983! Progressive Rock was, then, at best, outdated, at worst, dead. The British punk wave had done its work and, except for a few big names that changed their sound to a more 80's one, nobody, it seems, wanted anything to do with a new Progressive Rock band. Marillion's tour de force was to establish themselves as a genuine talent in a time and age that rejected those of their kind. From 1982 (their debut EP) to 1987, Marillion's fame grew exponentially as the band managed to give their music the 80's touch it needed to be accepted without ever compromising. It came as a shock when lead singer/lyricist Derek William Dick (a.k.a. Fish) decided to leave the band due to managerial and artistic differences with the other band members. Neither Marillion nor Fish as a solo artist ever regained the success they once had after that event. Four terrific and referential albums remain proving that Marillion was much more than just a 70's revival act.
