DEAD LINKS

NOTE : DEAD LINKS
We'd like to thank everyone for preventing us of dead links. For the moment, we are note able to re-up them.

Feel free to keep on preventing us of those dead links. We will update them when we (I and Jeb-E-Diah) have more time to (understand : from september). Some of them will be partially or completely repacked considering albums which would have been issued thereafter and surely with new and improved artworks.

Stay tuned !

HIGHWAY 61 RE-REVISITED (VAC #043)

HIGHWAY 61
RE-REVISITED

First of what will hopefully become a long series, Highway 61 Re-revisited is, as its title indicates, the recreation of Bob Dylan’s 1965 classic album in cover versions. The reason why I did not choose to cover Dylan’s discography chronologically is because I wanted to cover first the albums I think are essentials in the Zim’s discography and, starting with this one - a controversial album at its time as many folksters blamed Dylan because he abandoned his trademark acoustic sound - was a statement as to how free an artist Bob was and how bold a move this very album represented.
I hope you’ll enjoy the result.

DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD (VAC #041)

VARIOUS ARTISTS
DON’T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD

Created in 1964 by Nina Simone and covered the next year by Eric Burdon’s Animals to become a hit, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood has since become one of those songs many try their hands and throats on with various successes. As it should be, this selection gives you the three more popular versions (the aforementioned two plus Santa Esmeralda’s latino-disco 10 minutes extravaganza) and 15 others that are not always perfect but all give a personal take on the song. For example, Eric Burdon’s early 80’s live version suffers from Burdon having throat problems which makes it even more emotional if not always in tune (and sometimes painfully out of…). The 14 others range from blues to hard rock, from metal to folk and jazz (etc.) every one of them having something to offer. Enjoy.

21st CENTURY SCHIZOID MAN (VAC#029)

VARIOUS ARTISTS
21st CENTURY SCHIZOID MAN

Here's another collection of tracks based around a song. This one is 21st Century Schizoid Man, originally by King Crimson. One point that is interesting with that song is that, although its low age (40 years), it has been widely covered. Let's forget the easy ones (by ELP, Ozzy Osbourne, ...) and focus on much clever ones. Many of those covers are completely different from the original version, beginning with Johnny G's version (folk) or Disparition's (Morricone-like).
Another selection which was worth featuring our VAC serie !

CRY ME A RIVER (VAC #028)

VARIOUS ARTISTS
CRY ME A RIVER

It's been a while since we've had a special baistophe dedicated to one specific song. Today's subject will be Cry Me A River.
The first two versions I heard were very different. The first one was by Viktor Lazlo (not on this baistophe) sung in french and the second one was Joe Cocker's. I could hardly imagine that those two songs were twin brothers (or sisters). Years after, I discovered other versions and found that that song had been covered quite a lot!
The problem I met with this song is that so many versions are fairly similar. Fortunately, some people have had the wit to make it their own. That's why you'll find rock, jazz, funk or pop versions here and I believe it makes an homogenous lot which, I felt, would be a hard result to get.
Enjoy.

(Thanks to AYAH for another great compilation!)

BRICKS (VAC#026)

VARIOUS ARTISTS
BRICKS

Here we are! I think most of you have waited for this one and it's been a long long time for me to make it real. Here's the new Pink Floyd Cover Concept album. Based upon The Wall, it has necessarily its highs and lows. Indeed, I really wanted to make the whole album without forgetting any track, even Stop or Outside The Wall. But for some of those songs had I not the choice at all. Maybe I have not searched enough but that's what I really got. The biggest difficulty was to find each song from a different singer. That's what I nearly did. But Stop and The Trial are from the same singer. I had another version of The Trial from a swiss musical but the one from luther wright was much better. Here it is for your great pleasure!

WISH YOU WERE ANIMALS (VAC#022)

VARIOUS ARTISTS
WISH YOU WERE ANIMALS

Yeah ! 2 for the price of 1 ! In fact, until the end, I thought I would have been able to make two separate Floyd cover albums for Wish You Were Here and Animals, but the first one was really too short and I had to fuse both. Everything fits in the 80 minutes of a CD and are really complete. Even Shine On You Crazy Diamond, part 2 that was really hard to find : until the last time, I only had David Gilmour version, which cannot be taken as a cover version. In fact, this one is from a Tribute band called Off The Wall and is not very different from David's one. For the Animal part, I was amazed how much this album has been covered, but hardly found as interesting as Les Claypool's version. One of the highest points, to my point of view, is the version of Dogs, only with acoustic guitars : It's simply outblowing !
As a bonus track, I wanted to feature another, short, female-voiced version of Shine On You Crazy Diamond that I found great

SHOW ME YOUR DARK SIDE (VAC#021)

VARIOUS ARTISTS
SHOW ME YOUR DARK SIDE

I know I was waited for that part of the Pink Floyd cover project and I know no mistakes and no bad taste would be accepted. I know I can be hanged by the balls for that audacious artwork, but that made me so laugh!
However, everyone know that Dark Side Of The Moon is one of the most tributed albums. This is just another one... So many tributes to the Dark Side but a lot are forgettable: I have to mention an A capella version, a Jazz version, a Reggae version, a (good) bluegrass version, a lounge version, a female voices version, and many more as a version sung by children. It would have been so easy to make such a tribute, but the problem is, the more popular an album is the more stupid covers you find. And when it's not a stupid version, it's a so similar one that it does not have any interest (I first think of the Dream Theater version). So Dark Side, contrarily to what anyone would have expected, including me, was the most difficult PF tribute to compile. And even if I would not like difficulties, I also wanted the tacks to crossfade as the original ones do. Very uneasy for such different versions. But I made the crossfades and it seems to work out very fine for what could be the first side (until Money). After that, the tracks are so different from one another that you may feel uncomfortable with some transitions. I must apologize for it.

I JUST WANT TO MAKE LOVE TO YOU (VAC#020)

VARIOUS ARTISTS
I JUST WANT TO MAKE LOVE TO YOU

When I was a young man, I used to think that Valentine's day was the ugliest day of the year because it reminded every single people what they were... what I was... Now married, I haven't changed much my opinion... except that, from my new point of view, I also think that it's silly to commemorate love during only one day. What about the 364 or 365 other days ? should we commemorate hate, like some anonymous silly people ? absolutely not. However, if this day should be the day for love, this baistophe, made of (very) different versions of the cult song "I Just Want To Make Love To You", is just what Valentine Day's needs. 16 wonderful songs to remind you that love is what you make it!

MEDDLED IN THE CLOUDS (VAC#018)

VARIOUS ARTISTS
MEDDLED IN THE CLOUDS

Another step into the Pink Floyd covers project. For the same reason as on Ummagummore, nothing was really easy to bring all together a completed Obscured By Clouds album covered by other people. So I decided to put it on a bonus CD, so this Pink Floyd covers album is the first one to be a double-CD. Don't trust the number of tracks on the bonus CD, Monkey Gold, which is a live tune of a band called Somah (you'll find the complete concert on archives.org), is a bit of a medley of a Beatles' song (Everybody's Got Someting To Hide Except Me & My Monkey) and, of course, The Gold It's In The ... from you-know-who. This song is played in a typical Phish style and lasts at least 16 minutes !
For some reasons, I had to put two versions of Echoes. The first I chose finally is on the bonus CD. Indeed, this short accoustic version could have been the only one to be in there but I thought that many Echoes-maniacs would have burned me down if I did not put a closer version (Mostly Autumn's one). So I put both !

ATOM HEART MOTHER ... FROM WITHIN (VAC#017)

VARIOUS ARTISTS
ATOM HEART MOTHER ... FROM WITHIN

Now as an habit (bad habit ?), I'm purposing to you a cover version of a Pink Floyd album. This one could be the best of a long serie as AHM is my fav' PF album, but also because some tracks are simply amazing of interpretation... to begin with the eponymous track by the Paris Conservatory of Music which brings in this 30+ minutes version an incursion into Time (a song from Dark Side Of The Moon ... wouldn't yoy have guessed ? ;-) )
The other songs don't have to be ashamed because the versions are also nice. Even the Trance Remix version of Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast has an interest !

UMMAGUMORE (VAC#016)

VARIOUS ARTISTS
UMMAGUMORE

Third part of a long serie of Pink Floyd tributes, this one had to be that way. My very first aim was to make each Floyd album covered but I already knew that it would be really uneasy for many of them such as Ummagumma (too underground), More and Obscured By Clouds (not enough acclaimed) or even The Wall (how will I find a different version of each track ?). So, I had to think about a different point of view : This Ummagumore brings together what I found and really liked, putting apart songs that were never covered (so sad for Grandchester Meadows or The Narrow Way pt3) or cover versions that weren't good enough to feature on those compilations. So this is an incomplete More and an incomplete Ummagumma you'll find in that Ummagumore, but I'm quite proud of the result. So enjoy, and don't hesitate to tell me about versions I would have missed in the past or would miss in the future. Thanks for all.

A SAUCER FULL OF SECRETS (VAC015)

VARIOUS ARTISTS
A SAUCER FULL OF SECRETS

Behind this Title hides the second part of my Pink Floyd Tribute Project. This second one deals with Floyd's A Saucerful Of Secrets. This was much uneasier to gather cover version of that second album than for the first. The most difficult was unsurprisely Wright's Remember A Day. Maybe the greatest song of the album (difficult to decide when you listen to the last part of the eponymous track or to Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun), but nearly never got covered ! The only two versions I found were recorded since Rick's death and between a poor dance remix and Gilmour's version on the BBC the decision was fast. Only one question : Is a Pink Floyd song sung by Dave Gilmour a Pink Floyd cover ? The answer is Yes because at the time R.a.D. was recorded, Gilmour was not yet in the band...

THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN ... FROM ANOTHER POINT OF VIEW (VAC#013)

THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN ...
... FROM ANOTHER POINT OF VIEW

Here's another cover oriented project. This has always been mine but didn't really think that it could have been possible to assemble a whole Pink Floyd album only with cover versions. I begun with the very first album they recorded but, for sure, I won't stop there. I know many other will be easy to make but for others (More, Ummagumma, Obscured, The Wall, ...), I think I won't be able to find every track covered. So Two solutions may be possible : the first is not to treat them at all. The second is to gather some of those albums together as only one album... Except if someone can help me to complete my unfinished collection...
This first album has been much easier to complete because of Syd Barrett who was (and still is) an icone of rock'n'roll. However, some were very hard to find as "Pow R Toc H" or "Chapter 24". But I did it ! I just listened to it and realised it was really another album, so it wasn't a useless effort. Some bonus tracks are also included as at that time the Pink Floyd made some non album singles. Enjoy !

Niki Mono & Nikolaus Klau : Flaming

David Bowie : See Emily Play

We just changed the back cover. Indeed, one of the artists in the tracklist was wrong : Instead of David Lansing You had to understand Cult Of Apollo. Sorry for that mistake and sorry to Max Niketic to have mistaken his presence in that track.

NEVERMIND THE WALRUSES (VAC #012)

NEVERMIND THE WALRUSES

A selection of covers of the 1967 Beatles song... Those tracks were chosen because of either their quality or what they brought to the original... I've had to span over 50 versions of I Am The Walrus to make that selection, it's been a lot of fun and I hope it'll be as much fun listening to it. Enjoy!
